I see it far too often in my line of work.Stephanie Barrhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17772217449161603561noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8198390912401056862.post-58458457374359601922010-06-22T13:56:36.229-05:002010-06-22T13:56:36.229-05:00The infamous Dunning-Kruger effect.
Interestingly...The infamous Dunning-Kruger effect.

Interestingly, the other side of being too ignorant to know that you are ignorant is that people who do possess a large amount of expertise in a certain area both: 1) UNDER estimate their own knowledge; and 2) overestimate everyone else's.

Something to think about as we approach the ignorant--they might actually be even stupider than we think. The Motherhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15157821003454766570noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8198390912401056862.post-79369337863159292892010-06-22T09:41:05.495-05:002010-06-22T09:41:05.495-05:00Yes, Quadmama, I've quite the lyrical gift.
S...Yes, Quadmama, I've quite the lyrical gift.

Shakespeare, I think they were trying to make a distinction between the willfully ignorant and people too clueless to recognize their ignorance. I probably blurred the line by mentioning talk show commentators.

I think there is a potential difference between the two, but I admit it's hard to be sympathetic to people so certain of their omniscience that they are blind to reason, facts and alternates. Scientists can be prone to this problem - it's why science works so hard to ensure peer review and objective evidence.Stephanie Barrhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17772217449161603561noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8198390912401056862.post-19586238870032509162010-06-22T09:11:27.558-05:002010-06-22T09:11:27.558-05:00Every little bit I learn shows me how much I don&#...Every little bit I learn shows me how much I don't know.

Don't get me started on math. Don't know it. it's one of the few things I don't really want to know, either.

Now, I really wish I knew a bunch of languages. Fluently. Italian, Russian, Romanian, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Greek, Latin...

And that's only one facet. I know I'll run out of time... but until then, I'll keep learning.

The greatest problem with the ignorant is not that they don't know, but that they do not wish to know, that they have stopped learning. They live under the delusion that they are ignorant of nothing because they do not like feeling uncomfortable, but denying ignorance only causes them to be complacent, instead of struggling to learn what they cannot yet see.Dr. Cheryl Carvajalhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15323455180953109460noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8198390912401056862.post-38379573501435888902010-06-22T08:40:56.169-05:002010-06-22T08:40:56.169-05:00There is a lot I don't know, and I'm willi...There is a lot I don't know, and I'm willing to admit it. However, since I know the names of all of Henry's wives and how he "got rid of them" I feel smart. Joking aside, my favorite line in this post is "Things you didn't know you didn't know can bite you in the butt."
